Overview

Broadston was founded durring the early 11th century, by Meletye Chenvriu Coombes. The establishment of Broadston was plagued by a lack of willing colonists. After attempts to pay people to resettle failed Meletye Chenvriu Coombes struck deals with nearby nations and communities to establish Broadston as a prison colony.

Broadston was built using the conventions of Sylvin durring the early 11th century. Naturaly, all settlmentss have their own look to them, and Broadston is no diffrent. The town's buildings feature waddle and daub construction with good timber frames and a stone foundation protected by thatched or shingled rooves. Most buildings with second floors are built in such a way as to overhang into the streets on the upper floors for more space, as building size seems to be the primary indicator of wealth within the community. Most buildings are not decorated with any integral features, but instead use ivy, flowers, and other natural elements in planters of on trellices to breathe life into the structure they grow upon.

Broadston is buildings are grouped arround an odd layout of narrow baked earthen streets, which seems to be based on an overlapping squair patern such that there are small squares at the cornor of every bigger square. Sometimes buildings exist in the smaller squaires, other times they are open spaces, or occupied by temporary structures. The town is the proud owner of a properly designed set of renforced walls made from mighty querried stone blocks. Their construction and material choices would make a dwarf weap with joy, for each and every part of the elaborate fortifications are purly functional and robust well byond reason. Even nonexperts can tell the walls are an excelent defencive structure. The town's exceptionaly well made fortifications are visibly old, but also obviously maintained semi-regularly. Its likly the local malishia or garrison are tasked with ocasional mantance of the towns defences.

A look around Broadston is like a look into a broken heart. There is no planning, no organization. Everyone here clearly goes about their own thing with little thought to anyone around them who isn’t selling something they need. It’s not malicious. Heads are hung. Eyes are empty. Something truly horrible happened here once upon a time and the town never healed.

Cultural Notes

Broadston 's mayor's house was built using a different architectural style from the rest of the town. The style used is characterized by towering round arches, massive stone and brickwork, small windows, thick walls, and a propensity for housing art and sculpture depicting mythological scenes. The building's general shape would be a clever and ascetic combination of geometric shapes, which would be blended together by joining elements. The style's decorative features were largely internal rather than external and incorporated semicircular arches for windows, doors, and arcades; barrel or groin vaults to support the roof of the nave; massive piers and walls, with few windows, to contain the outward thrust of the vaults; side aisles with galleries above them..

Due to the actions of local Kami, spring is long in Broadston .

The Alseid near Broadston are known to be more aggressive than normal.

Broadston 's citizens partake in a curious ritual relating to their local kami. It takes place in winter and involves embarking on a group pilgrimage to channel Truename Magic energies of tier 2 via recitation of poetic epics.

Points of Interest

Broadston is a major trade hub, connecting several important cities or resource production areas. It’s probably at an important river juncture, ancient crossroads, or occupying the only safe path through some perilous wilderness. Its position may be important enough that it can survive on trade alone, despite being unable to feed itself with the surrounding land. Such hubs are usually heavily garrisoned by the lord who profits from their tariffs and taxes.

Broadston has a substantial mill pond located a short distance from town.

POI

History

In time immemorial, reportedly some time during the late 2nd century, Broadston was attacked by members of a peasant revolt. The details of the conflict are hazy at best due to many conflicting accounts. What is known is Broadston lost 177 people, 180 livestock, and 75 buildings. The conflict ended after roughly 32, when members of Broadston 's militia enacted an operation to fortify a particular strategic location. The operation was complicated by a significant percentage of the militia choose to go abandon the operation and return home. The conflict ended with the defense of the strategic location against a siege, which ended in a stalemate for Broadston 's forces. The war is remembered in legend by Broadston 's bards, historians, and legend keepers.
